CPM manufactures the Hot Start Conditioner,
which has the means to get 100 percent of the meal up
to a specified temperature prior to discharge, said Phil
Wellhausen, CPM applications manager.
"The Hygieniser, which is a first-in/first-out (FIFO)
vessel, receives the heated meal from the Hot Start
Conditioner and then holds that meal for a specified and
repeatable time prior to discharging into the pellet mill,"
he said. "This two-step process provides the means necessary for a kill step."
Understanding the problem is half the solution
Pathogens, like Salmonella and E. coli, are found
almost anywhere in the environment and can enter a mill
from dust, bird droppings or contaminated ingredients.
Because of this, it is easy to re-contaminate feed after it
has gone through the kill step process.
It's important to note that the kill step is only part of
the equation to produce a safe, quality product. Feed mills
also need to purchase quality materials and maintain a
